Listen to the gospel-tinged ‘Love Can Be A Battlefield’ and you’ll be convinced this is the voice of a veteran singer. So the fact that vocals so powerful should come from 21-year-old Florence Rawlings is testament to the natural star quality that this singer possesses in spades. Florence takes the song, written by her mentor Mike Batt, and imbues it with a smoky, wounded quality that would put her elders and supposed peers to shame. Florence
first impressed Dramatico chairman Mike Batt seven years ago when she was 13
years old and Mike had just signed Katie Melua. Whilst Katie went on to sell
millions of albums around the world, Florence stayed on at school, performed
at clubs and pubs in her spare time (“I’d sing for whoever was willing to listen…at school, in clubs and
bars…anywhere I could”), and kept in
touch with Mike.
